Cantilever Control Box & Operator Station Guide

Cantilever Control Box & Operator Station Guide

When a machine needs an HMI, a robot pendant, pushbuttons and a handwheel, but the machine body offers no suitable mounting surface, a cantilever control box (operator station) is the answer: an articulated arm extends the controls out from the machine, keeps the workspace clear and lets you position the panel exactly where the operator needs it. Machine tools, robot cells and automation lines are the three most common applications. This guide covers the structure, series logic and selection steps.

What an Operator Station Is Made Of

A typical cantilever operator station = arm assembly + control/operator box + accessories:

Part Function QITAI series
Cantilever arm Support and positioning; telescoping, folding and angle adjustment GN series (GNL80 / GNM55 / GNS45), GT series (GTS / GTL / GTN / GTM)
Control / operator box Carries the HMI, buttons and switches; protects the electronics QT series (QT70/71, QT130/QT200, QT140/QT210, QT060/QT105/QT160), aluminum
Accessories Keyboard trays, handheld operator boxes, cable transit boxes KBS / KBM keyboard trays, QTBX handheld box, QH420 transit box

Two mounting forms to keep apart:

  • Fixed type: base bolted to the machine or a column; for permanent line stations.
  • Mobile type: swivel or magnetic base that moves with the machine; for commissioning, inspection and shared use across machines.

Three Application Scenarios

  1. Machine tools / machining centers. The HMI and operator panel mount on the cantilever, so the operator does not lean over the machine; the panel folds out of the way during cutting, improving safety.
  2. Robot cells / automation lines. Pendant, e-stop and jog controls are centralized on the operator station; wiring runs through the arm's internal cable channels, keeping the floor tidy and maintenance fast.
  3. Inspection and mobile equipment. A handheld operator box (QTBX) combined with a cantilever suits inspection benches and AGV loading/unloading stations where the operating point moves frequently.

Selection in Four Steps

  1. Size the box first. Match the QT box to the panel you are mounting (e.g. 7 / 10 / 15 inch HMI). For outdoor or oily environments, note the material and finish — QITAI's QT series is aluminum, with anodized natural and powder-coated finishes (e.g. RAL7001) available.
  2. Pick the arm. Choose within the GN series (GNL80 / GNM55 / GNS45) or GT series (GTS / GTL / GTN / GTM) based on box weight and reach; fixed and mobile types pair with different bases.
  3. Add accessories. Keyboard trays (KBS/KBM) for mouse and keyboard input; QTBX handheld box for mobile operation; QH420 transit box to tidy high cable counts.
  4. Confirm mounting. Verify the mounting surface (machine / column / floor) and the required angle range, so the panel stays reachable and does not block the work zone.

Common Mistakes

  • Sizing the arm by the box alone. The arm and the box are separate structures — an oversized box on an undersized arm sags and drifts; they must be matched.
  • Using a mobile base as a fixed one. Swivel or magnetic bases are for commissioning and inspection; a permanent station needs a locking base, or it will loosen.
  • Ignoring cable management. HMIs, buttons and sensors bring many cables; without a transit box or cable channels, wires chafe and the site is hard to maintain.
  • Choosing the finish for looks only. Anodizing vs powder coating affects corrosion resistance — in oily or humid shops, match the finish to the environment.
